Heretic

Heretic was another exciting opportunity to work with Directors: Scott Beck & Bryan Woods, who are big fans of practical effects. Chris lead the team at Gaslight as well as being the HOD on set. The Prophet’s prosthetic makeup as well as the puppet were designed to look shockingly emaciated, filthy, and ravaged by neglect and abuse. This was key to their story.

The multiple injuries the films characters suffered were all tested in-shop to ensure production knew exactly what to expect and could film the best angles. All pieces were custom as well as a silicone head of Hugh Grant for the fatal blow. Prosthetic comfort and movement were paramount, so all the actor prosthetics were made and tested for the best wearability.

Strange New Worlds

Chris’s expertise in prosthetic application is on display in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. As the head of the prosthetics department, he skillfully leads a talented team in applying and maintaining the show’s extraordinary makeup. Among his favorite tasks is applying the Spock look each day as well as contributing his own unique prosthetics to the series.

The Lost Symbol - Makeup and Prosthetics - Gaslight FX Studio

The Lost Symbol

One of the biggest effects we provided for The Lost Symbol was the creation of two intricate full-body tattoos. The main antagonist, Mal’ak, was covered from head to toe in a striking design.

A significant challenge was transforming the 2D design provided by the graphic designer into a dynamic 3D graphic that would seamlessly fit the actor’s body like an intricate puzzle. We used advanced body templating techniques to ensure the artwork conformed perfectly to the actor’s physique. On set it took a team of six people four hours to meticulously apply the complex tattoos and the result was a stunning visual.

Haunt - Gaslight FX Studio - Concept and Design

Haunt

For Haunt, we designed, built, and applied the prosthetic makeup, tackling the challenge of bringing the characters’ monstrous body modifications to life while keeping the designs grounded in reality. Each piece was meticulously crafted, from twisted limbs to gnarled features, ensuring they looked terrifying yet believable.

Collaboration with the Directors was key to enhancing the film’s eerie atmosphere. Working on Haunt was a horrifyingly good experience, resulting in chilling effects that left a lasting impression, and inspired a cult-following and fan-art.
